https://nursafarnananda.wordpress.com/2013/09/11/donatellos-david-vs-michelangelos-david/
Sculpture Study #1: cropped and zoomed view of your selected sculpture (not the face) hands & feet with fabric are the best choices. Show me if you're unsure and are choosing something else. DO NOT use the face for this. This will be completed in CONTE CRAYON. High contrast in your selected image is key.
Sculpture Study #2: cropped and zoomed view of your selected sculpture (not the face) hands & feet with fabric are the best choices. Show me if you're unsure and are choosing something else. DO NOT use the face for this. This will be completed in WATER COLOUR PAINT. Your chosen portion must be significantly different than the portion you chose for the first. High contrast in your selected image is key.
Sculpture Study #3: cropped and zoomed view of the FACE of your selected sculpture. High contrast in this image is key. This will be completed in OIL PAINT.

Sculpture Studies
Sculpture Study # 1 - Conte Crayon
In the first of your sculpture 3 studies, you will explore the use of Conte crayon sticks to see how various marks, lines and tones can be created using this new media. Conte is made from pigment and graphite held together with a gum binder and grease. Resembling pastels in appearance and consistency, they are slightly harder and more oily. Conte crayon comes in square sticks and pencils..This control exercise will help you hone the skills you have developed already in creating value, smooth gradients and control while expanding your drawing media options. Materials: Black, white and sanguine Conte Crayons, fixative spray and drawing paper Practice on scrap paper is important to get comfortable with how this media behaves. It is similar to chalk pastel which you have used. Use a Q-tip if you need to blend some areas to save damaging your blender. Avoid over blending - you will know this is happening when you lose broad value range and it looks fuzzy and overly soft. |
DUE: Friday Sept 16 - extended deadline if accommodation is needed: Mon Sept 19 |
Sculpture Study # 2 - Water Colour Paint
In the second sculpture study you will explore a new type of paint that you have not used yet in art class, water colour paints. This paint is varies from transparent, translucent to opaque in appearance it allows you to create subtle changes in value by building up layers of paint. Water colours can be moved around on a page differently than other types of paint. Using washes and working patiently due to drying time and how much water is involved are key to success with this media. We will complete 2 introductory technical exercises to lead you into the sculpture study piece for your project using water colour paint. This will help familiarize you with the media and give you some quality practice & review prior to completing the actual sculpture study. We will do these together step by step in class. Exercise 1: watercolour techniques Exercise 2: layout, value, tone Materials: water colour paints, pallette, cold press watercolour paper, soft bristle brushes |
DUE: Friday Sept 30 - extended deadline if accommodation is needed: Mon. Oct 3 This due date requires that you hand in your in class step-by-step exercises as well as your finished sculpture study piece. |
OIL vs. ACRYLIC
This summative unit project will be the first time many of you have used oil paint. You will be doing your under painting in acrylic paint and then using oil to create your final image on top.
You will be focused on a cropped view of the face of your sculpture and you will be working in a monochromatic colour scheme. We will discuss in class how to use this paint differently than acrylics and water colours as it behaves in some unfamiliar ways. To understand what to expect and learn what the differences are that you should look for in an oil painting you will be comparing them in your notes and through this project. |
After you do your underpainting you will be using the notes provided here create a chart in your notebook that compares and contrasts oil and acrylic paint.
Materials: oil paint (water based), oil medium, non-toxic thinner, synthetic or coarse bristle brushes, canvas board
DUE: Friday Oct 14 - extended deadline if accommodation is needed: Mon. Oct 17 |
