EGYPTIAN ART
Hieroglyphs - Egyptian form of writing based on symbols. They are not a full alphabet as we know it today. It is a phoenotic alphabet. The letters are pictures that represent sounds.
We are able to read Hieroglyphics because of the ROSETTA STONE. You can read a short story about how the Rosetta Stone was discovered, how it helped us finally translate ancient writings and what it said on it by clicking here.
Egyptian writing was often carved into clay or stone. Some of the writing can be found on PAPYRUS. Papyrus is the first paper and was made by the ancient Egyptians using grasses and reeds.
Read the chapters on Ancient Art and Egyptian art in your text book "Understanding Art" and complete the assigned questions. Complete the handouts provided (copies below)
Then use the Egyptian Alphabet to figure out your first and last name in Heiroglyphs. Remember it is all based on SOUNDS and it is not letter-by-letter translation! Do this in your Sketchbook.
